Van Carson has more than 40 years of experience representing the interests of industrial and public clients in environmental matters. He has particular expertise in dealing with matters related to the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act and in Superfund matters.
Van represents a wide range of clients including companies from the manufacturing, refining, steel, mining and chemical industries, as well as public sector clients ranging from small municipalities to large regional sewer districts. His representation of public and industrial clients in recent Clean Water Act matters has been on the cutting edge of evolving water law.
Van is focusing his practice on the emerging area of environmental equity and is handling one of the largest environmental equity impacted Superfund cases in the United States.
He has extensive experience with sediment issues including participating in the development of the static sediment bioassay procedures and negotiating the application of sediment criteria to a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) discharge-impacted stream segment.
Van is a member of the American Bar Association’s Litigation Section, the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association’s Environmental Law Committee and the Ohio State Bar Association’s Environmental Law Committee. He is also a member of the executive committee and vice chairman of the board of directors of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. Van has been selected by his peers to be included in The Best Lawyers in America for more than 10 years. He is listed in The International Who's Who of Environmental Lawyers 2011 and Chambers USA: America’s Leading Business Lawyers 2011 and was designated as a Leading Lawyer in Northeast Ohio by Inside Business magazine as well as being named an Ohio Super Lawyer in a survey distributed by Thomson Reuters each year since 2004.
