Squire Sanders Continues Los Angeles Growth as Corporate Lawyer James L. Hsu Joins Firm
8 January 2010
Global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. is expanding both its cross-border China practice and its Los Angeles office with the addition of partner James L. Hsu, a corporate lawyer who advises Chinese businesses with interests across the world and foreign companies doing business in China.
Firm Chair James J. Maiwurm said Hsu has singular experience in the Greater China region and interest in Latin America. Hsu has worked in Shanghai and Taipei and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, the latter the result of living in Costa Rica for several years.
“James advises a variety of clients including businesses based in Asia and US-based companies owned or operated by leading members of the Chinese-American community in Los Angeles,” Maiwurm said. “His background complements the firm’s long-term presence in China and its more recent growth in Latin America.” Squire Sanders in 2008 added several Central and South America-based firms to the Squire Sanders Legal Counsel Worldwide Network, which takes the firm to more countries in Latin America than any other major law firm.
Dynda A. Thomas, who leads the firm’s Corporate Transactions, Finance & Governance Practice Group, said, “James’ experience gives Squire Sanders additional resources to support our China-based clients. We're also very excited about the potential to work with more businesses that have new focus on opportunities in Latin America.”
In addition to his cross-border focus and experience, Hsu generally represents clients in a broad range of corporate and securities matters including mergers and acquisitions, debt and equity offerings, fund formation, private equity and venture capital transactions, joint ventures and partnerships.
Hsu joins Squire Sanders from Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP and is the most recent addition to Squire Sanders’ Los Angeles office. In December, intellectual property lawyer David T. Miyamoto and corporate lawyer Joon Y. Kim joined the Los Angeles office. Kim will also work from the firm’s Tokyo office.
“James will be a tremendous addition to the China practice in Los Angeles,” said James H. (Jake) Broderick, Los Angeles office managing partner.
Hsu said his clients in Asia and the United States will benefit from access to Squire Sanders’ three China-based offices, the firm’s offices in Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, as well as affiliated network firms in Latin America.
He received his J.D. in 1994 from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law, where he was editor in chief of the
Asian Pacific American Law Journal and articles editor of the
Journal of Environmental Law & Policy. He received his B.A. in 1991, also from UCLA. Hsu has served on the boards of directors of the Asian Business League of Southern California, California ALL, the Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE) and the executive advisory boards of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center and Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN) in Los Angeles.
