Alan Doris has focused his practice on taxation for more than 25 years. In particular, Alan has substantial experience in the structuring and negotiating of mergers and acquisitions. He has been involved in public and private, taxable and tax-free, mergers, acquisitions and spinoffs, as well as in the public issuance of innovative debt and equity corporate securities. He is listed in Who’s Who in America and has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America for more than 15 consecutive years.
Alan has an active tax controversy and litigation practice including controversies involving taxes of between US$1 million and US$100 million.
He has tried a number of cases in both tax and district courts, and argued cases in the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Alan is a frequent speaker at tax conferences including those dealing with the purchase and sale of businesses, the amortization of intangibles and the issue of whether costs should be expensed or capitalized. He was the principal author of the American Bar Association’s comments on the United States Treasury regulations dealing with the amortization of intangibles.
Alan is a former chairman of the Cleveland Tax Institute and is a member of the American Bar Association’s Tax Section Committee on Government Submissions, the Ohio State Bar Association and the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association.
