Matthew T. Blackshear

Senior Associate

Matthew Blackshear has experience representing commercial clients in transactional and litigation matters. Matthew focuses his practice in the areas of commercial real estate acquisition, finance, development, leasing, and title and survey matters, as well as general business law including the purchase and sale of assets and businesses, mergers and acquisitions, entity formation, commercial contracts, corporate compliance and confidentiality matters. He has significant experience representing lenders and borrowers in commercial real estate matters and asset-based financings from both a transactional and litigation perspective including commercial loan foreclosures, workouts and restructurings, as well as construction litigation.

Matthew has been selected for inclusion in Florida Super Lawyers–Rising Stars, published by Thomson Reuters, each year since 2009, a distinction honoring the top up-and-coming lawyers, defined as 40 years of age and younger or in the practice of law for less than 10 years.

Matthew is a member of The Florida Bar and serves on the board of trustees of a local special dependent taxing district.

Representative Experience

    • Representing regional, national and international lenders in substantial secured loans, acquisitions and development matters including those relating to apartment communities, commercial shopping complexes, residential and commercial high-rise and mid-rise condominium projects, and retail pad sites.
    • Representing commercial landlords and tenants in complex lease negotiations and in eviction and damages actions including suits on guaranties.
    • Representing the franchisee of a national restaurant chain with construction loans and acquisition and development matters.
    • Representing a seller/financer of golf courses in foreclosure and deficiency judgment litigation, as well as the sale of foreclosed property.
    • Representing syndicated lenders and an administrative agent in foreclosure and deficiency litigation regarding loans for the construction of condominium towers including receivership and rehabilitative real estate matters.
    • Representing real estate developers in acquisition and development matters and in joint ventures with third parties.
    • Curing and resolving title issues including boundary disputes, access issues, mortgage and lien priority and enforcement, easements and other real estate impediments.
    • Advising in matters involving the enforcement of commercial property restrictions.
    • Representing a national real estate investment trust (REIT) in a reverse-merger with a publicly traded national restaurant REIT.
    • Representing a national retirement properties REIT in the acquisition of more than US$750 million in assets.
