Margie Tannock

Margie Tannock’s practice focuses on environmental and planning law, sustainable development regulation and major project approvals. She works with clients and regulators to resolve issues involving strategic transactions, managing environmental risks, planning and obtaining environmental, planning and other regulatory authorisations. She also advises on land valuations and issues related to land contamination and pollution.
With a deep understanding of the regulatory framework that applies to land development in Western Australia, Margie is able to deliver strategic advice and commercial solutions involving property and infrastructure developments. Margie has advised on land access environmental approvals for major port and rail projects for resource companies and she represents a number of leading universities in the areas of governance, asset development and strategic planning.
She handles major land compensation claims, represents clients at the State Administrative Tribunal in planning matters and conducts proceedings in native title claims before the Federal Court.
Margie serves on the Advisory Board of the Centre for the Built Environment and Health, a research institute within the University of Western Australia, and the Board of Trinity College. She is a member of the Urban Development Institute of Australia. She has lectured on property law and advocacy at the University of Notre Dame, Australia. She is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and has been appointed a mentor with Women in Mining and Resources Western Australia.
Representative Experience
- Preparing and successfully negotiating tripartite agreements for developer contributions between government agencies including the Department of Housing, local government and private developers.
- Advising Brookfield Multiplex on town planning, environmental compensation and local government aspects of a major master planned community, including Bush Forever proposals.
- Acting for Peet Limited regarding a major subdivision development including negotiating proposed developer contributions for intersection and upgrade costs.
- Advising The University of Western Australia on major urban property development including achieving state and federal environmental approvals.
- Providing advice in relation to extractive industry in environmentally sensitive areas and advising on state and federal planning and environmental regulatory regime including mine closure requirements.
- Acting for Roy Hill Infrastructure on providing extended advice for delivery of state and federal environmental approvals for port infrastructure and Bonney Downs rail development under State Agreement including negotiation and submissions to Office of the Appeals Convenor, Minister for Environment.
- Conducting major litigation for a property development company (including briefing of senior counsel) before the State Administrative Tribunal for a compensation claim for taking of land against Main Roads under the Land Administration Act 1997 and successfully concluding settlement in mediation, including an award of costs.
- Advising Edith Cowan University on negotiating a major funding agreement with the Commonwealth Government for establishing a medical facility, which included preparing and advising on the services agreement and subcontract for the medical services provider, and delivering and implementing governance advice including guidance on corporate structure.
