Kathleen M. Portman

Kathleen Portman focuses her practice on labor and employment matters including school law and employment litigation at the state, federal and administrative levels. Kathleen represents employers in claims dealing with termination, employee discipline and defense of employment discrimination claims under Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and other employment-related matters. She also represents school districts on employment-related issues.
Kathleen joined Squire Sanders, where she was a summer associate, directly from law school. During law school she served as a law clerk for the Washtenaw County Public Defenders Office in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she represented clients in criminal matters. Kathleen also served as a law clerk for Legal Aid Services, where she assisted clients with eviction and mortgage foreclosure defenses, and with immigration matters including status adjustments, work cards and alien relative applications.
Prior to attending law school, Kathleen worked as a research associate for the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, conducting cross-disciplinary research in human genetics and developmental biology.
Kathleen is a member of the American, Ohio State, Akron, and Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Associations.
