Julian Reynolds

Senior Associate

Julian’s particular expertise covers advising on patentability of inventions and patent filing strategies, patent procurement, and patent infringement and validity opinions. Julian specialises in inventions and patents in electronics and computing, as well as handling telecommunications, mechanical, physics and optical technologies.

Julian entered the patent profession in 1988, and has gained experience both in industry and private practice, representing before the UKIPO, EPO and international authorities. Julian is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, epi, the IET and the IEEE Computer Society.

Representative Experience

    • Advising various SME companies on patentability of inventions (especially software and business methods), and on patent filing/prosecution strategies
    • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications relating to electrical and mechanical equipment for European and Japanese electronics multinationals
    • Drafting patent applications related to stand-off detection of weapons and explosives for airport and other security systems, for a UK university
    • Prosecution of numerous patent applications worldwide (including UK, PCT and EPO) in the portfolio of a British utility infrastructure multinational
    • Conducting competitor due diligence research and analysis, providing patent infringement and validity opinions, and prosecuting registered design applications worldwide, for a UK medical equipment design company
    • Drafting patent applications and patent infringement opinions for several small British electronics and engineering companies
    • Conducting freedom-to-operate searches and advising on potential infringement of patents relating to gas and electricity meters, for a major UK utility meter manufacturer
    • Conducting hearings before EPO Examining and Opposition divisions, and Boards of Appeal, for a US distributed computer systems designer
    • Carrying out technical and advisory work in support of litigators in English High Court patent infringement and validity actions relating to glass-making and fuel combustion patents
    • Advising on IP-related agreements, including worldwide recordals of patent assignments and security interests.
