James Reed focuses his practice on intellectual property (IP) matters including patent prosecution, counseling, litigation and IP transactions in the mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering fields.
James has prosecuted hundreds of patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office including numerous appeals before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, assisted clients with securing patents in foreign countries and managed international patent portfolios. He has also advised, on numerous occasions, on the validity, enforceability and infringement of patents in order to assess risks to his clients, or evaluate assets for potential or planned mergers and acquisitions.
James also has several years of patent litigation experience. Representative litigations include patents in the medical device, databases and software, LCD, golf club, RFID and children’s products fields.
James’ 2008 article on US Patent and Trademark Office rulemakings was published in Thomson Reuters’
Patent Law Review as one of the best pieces on US patent law.
Before turning to the practice of law, James was a senior aerospace engineering consultant to NASA/GSFC in Greenbelt, Maryland.
James is a member of the San Francisco Bay Area Intellectual Property American Inn of Court.
