James P. Murphy

Partner

James P. Murphy focuses his practice on commercial litigation, including breach of contract, antitrust, bankruptcy, environmental insurance coverage, real estate, telecommunications, banking, fraud, tax, oil and gas, patent infringement, commercial negligence and securities cases. He served as a member of the firm’s management committee from July 1988 to July 1991 and from September 1995 to September 1999, and as its financial partner from 2000 to 2003. He also has served as coordinator of the Washington DC office’s litigation practice.

James' recent litigation experience includes representing the Unsecured Creditors Committee in the Enron Corp. bankruptcy proceeding and numerous clients in environmental insurance cases.

James also acts as liaison counsel for all litigation matters referred to the firm by a major global telecommunications provider. In this role, he has represented the client in a variety of commercial and telecommunications related litigation. He concentrates on litigation involving financial and accounting issues.

James is listed in The Legal 500 US 2010 for his product liability expertise.

Representative Experience

    • Investigating the role of various financial institutions in the Enron Corp. bankruptcy.
    • Advising in the environmental insurance action in Pennsylvania state court seeking monetary relief for past and future defense costs and damages at more than 35 client sites.
    • Representing an Ohio savings bank in alleged tortious interference and breach of contract litigation, arising from a real estate loan.
    • Representing a non-US oil company in a class action litigation brought by current and former retail station dealers.
    • Advising in class action litigation brought by consumers of allegedly defective automobile parts.
    • Representing a major auto parts manufacturer in numerous breach of contract and product liability cases.
    • Representing a home appliance company in several patent infringement cases.
    • Representing the largest crude oil producer on the North Slope of Alaska in state production tax and royalty litigation.
    • Representing a major law firm in a dispute relating to its malpractice insurance coverage.
    • Representing a computer systems designer in litigation relating to government contracts.
