Pensions

Squire Sanders’ pensions group is a key practice team. Our practice has 15 partners and approximately 45 other lawyers who work primarily in UK pensions, supplemented by a number of colleagues in our Europe offices who also do pensions work. Our ability to draw on our rich heritage makes us one of the largest and most experienced pure pensions teams in the UK and possibly within the European Union. In recognition of our expertise, we were named the Global Pensions Law Firm of the Year for 2011 by Global Pensions magazine, which serves the institutional pensions industry across the globe.

Our size gives us genuine critical mass and avoids “reinventing the wheel” – even on complex matters. Our work with leading industry bodies such as the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) keeps us – and our clients – ahead of the game on new developments.

Working closely with our taxation and benefits and labor and employment teams, we offer deep expertise in helping trustee boards and corporate sponsors manage pension plan change. We are experienced in developing and advising on risk management and creative deficit funding solutions for defined benefit plan arrangements and in advising on the implementation of alternative, tax-efficient compensation structures.

In addition to our advice to clients on the pension aspects of corporate acquisitions, disposals, mergers and reorganizations, we assist employers and trustees in setting up and running pension plans. This involves drafting documentation, negotiations with the Inland Revenue and other regulators, and analysis of legal developments.

Within our market-leading pension plan investment practice (advising trustee boards and corporate sponsors on the legal aspects of pension plan investment), we handle buy-in/buy-out work and offer broad expertise in securing member benefits whether for ongoing schemes or those in the process of winding up.

Squire Sanders’ pensions practice also offers trusteeship services and provides market-leading trustee training.

Pensions work is increasingly litigious with huge sums frequently at stake. Our dedicated pensions disputes team aims to cut through jargon and offer practical advice and personal service.

To ensure complete service to clients, our international benefits practice assists transnational employers with aspects of pensions and other benefits for individuals, business units or the whole organization.
