Greg Steinepreis

Greg Steinepreis brings globally recognised contractual, advisory and dispute resolution expertise to his key role in many of Western Australia’s largest resources, energy and infrastructure projects. He advises energy and resources clients on procurement and works contracts and on project management. Greg's specific project experience includes Australia's major liquefied natural gas (LNG) and iron ore mining projects. He has advised government authorities as well as leading contractors and consultants on the delivery of public infrastructure including major roads and rail and on urban redevelopment. He also has assisted governmental entities and power producers regarding electricity supply contracts and electricity industry regulation.

Greg's involvement in the construction and engineering industry is supported by more than twenty years of experience in dispute resolution. Not only does he represent parties in litigation, arbitration, adjudication and mediation, he also is a Grade 1 arbitrator of international and domestic construction disputes and an accredited mediator.

Greg has been consistently ranked as a leading construction lawyer in Australia and internationally in peer review guides including Who's Who Legal (2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011), Chambers Global 2009 to 2011 and Australian Financial Review's 2011 Best Lawyers survey from 2008 to 2011. Best Lawyers named him 2012 Perth Construction/Infrastructure Lawyer of the Year. Greg is listed in Chambers Asia Pacific 2012 as a leading individual in Australia for construction law. He is active in several major legal and industry bodies including the Construction and Infrastructure Forum of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia.

Representative Experience

    • Advising Australia's largest mining services contractor and other leading Australia-based miners on their BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto iron ore mining and works contracts in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
    • Negotiating engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and engineering, procurement and supply (EPS) contracts relating to the upgrade of the gas turbine-powered Newman Power Station in the Pilbara region.
    • Advising on and negotiating contracts relating to major Australia-based LNG projects including marine structures/wharfs and other packages for the AU$43 billion Gorgon Gas Project, and the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract and EPC packages for the power station and site development of the AU$20 billion Ichthys LNG Project.
    • Reviewing and advising on the head contract (managing contractor contract) and preparing subcontracts relating to the construction, operation and maintenance of the AU$1.5 billion Fiona Stanley Hospital.
    • Preparing an operational road map for managers of the South East Queensland Schools Public Private Partnership involving the design, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of seven government schools.
    • Providing high level contract reviews, advice and participation in contract negotiations and contract preparation to a preferred engineering/construction consortium on the alliance contract for the design, construction and maintenance of the AU$511 million, 71 km New Perth Bunbury (Forrest) Highway. 
    • Acting for owners and developers on commercial building disclosure (CBD) and urban renewal projects including refurbishing the AMP Tower and preparing periodic works and construction contracts for the East Perth and Subiaco redevelopments.
    • Advising an international subsea pipeline and offshore engineering contractor on contracts and subcontracts relating to its oil and gas projects in Australia and New Zealand.
    • Acting for the EPC contractor at the AU$1 billion Murrin Murrin nickel and cobalt project in Supreme Court litigation and international arbitration of a AU$20 million dispute relating to the Bulong nickel project.
    • Representing parties in more than 30 adjudications of construction disputes covering rail and road projects, greenfield and brownfield processing plants, major resources projects and building construction.
