George Brandon

George Brandon has more than 30 years of experience handling commercial litigation matters and serves as the chair of the Phoenix litigation group. He has served a wide range of clients such as banks, members of the securities industry, publishing companies, land developers, high-tech companies, agricultural cooperatives and various not-for-profit corporations. He has substantial jury and bench trial experience in federal and state courts in Phoenix, New York and Washington DC.

George has been lead counsel in the trial of commercial disputes in state, federal and federal bankruptcy courts on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants. For example, he obtained a judgment in excess of US$50 million in a real estate matter after trial for a well-known national corporation in its capacity as owner of a midtown Manhattan office building. George also has extensive experience with disputes involving federal securities law, antitrust matters, banking law, contracts, product liability, common law fraud and negligence, as well as trusts and estates and international trade matters.

George is widely recognized for his numerous publications including more than 20 law review and professional articles in the last 10 years.

He has been selected by his peers for inclusion in Southwest Super Lawyers, a distinction honoring the top 5 percent of lawyers in the region, each year since 2007.

He is a member of the Federal Bar Council, the Association of Business Trial Lawyers (Los Angeles), the Board of Editors of The Banking Law Journal and the Board of Arbitrators of the International Chamber of Commerce.

Representative Experience

    • Defending successfully a major multinational chemical company in several significant antitrust class action suits involving vitamin products.
    • Defending successfully in securities fraud claims totaling, respectively,
      US$21 million and US$7.5 million, made against a major bank’s Arizona subsidiary.
    • Serving as lead litigation counsel for the Phoenix Coyotes hockey team of the National Hockey League in connection with the team’s 2009 bankruptcy filing, including an antitrust claim against the League and eventual sale of the team to the League.
    • Representing successfully, at jury trial and on appeal, a major money center bank in making new law in the area of electronic funds transfers under the Uniform Commercial Code.
    • Receiving a complete defense verdict on a US$35 million claim after a lengthy trial of the largest adversary proceeding filed in In Re Maxwell Communications Corp., on behalf of joint administrators (US and UK) of a bankruptcy estate.
    • Obtaining dismissal in the US District Court of a securities fraud claim under Rule 10b5 for an Australia-based bank, followed by successful argument of an appeal at the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on behalf of all nine defendants.
    • Obtaining two successive jury verdicts in two different cases for the largest agricultural cooperative association in Arizona, including one of more than US$1 million, on claims for breach of its membership agreement against two different former members, as well as a defense judgment on antitrust and other counterclaims brought against the cooperative by both members.
    • Serving as Arizona trial counsel for a large Japan-based tire manufacturer in the defense of numerous cases relating to allegedly defective tires sold by its wholly owned US subsidiary and allegedly related rollovers of SUVs.
