Timothy John Smith

Registered Foreign Legal Consultant

With more than 30 years of corporate experience, Timothy John Smith is resident full-time in Brazil. Timothy acts as lead counsel to multinational clients in connection with transactions in Central and South America, Europe and elsewhere and is a member of the Latin America Steering Committee.

His practice involves a broad based general and international corporate focus including commercial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, energy, major construction contracting, secured transactions, white collar crime, debtor/creditor relations, reorganizations, securities, real estate and trade matters.

Timothy regularly teaches classes at the University of California-Davis in the LL.M. program on construction contracting, international contracts, secured transactions, project finance and corruption.

Prior to his work in Latin America, Timothy was based in Squire Sanders’ office in Budapest, Hungary.

Timothy is a member of the District of Columbia and Michigan Bar Associations. He is a registered foreign legal adviser with the Brazilian (OAB-Rio) and Hungarian Bars.

Experiencia Reciente

    • Representing one of the world's largest companies in various international greenfield projects for the construction of manufacturing facilities including drafting and negotiating engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts, construction management contracts, real estate purchase agreements, gas and electrical energy infrastructure contracts and supply contracts.
    • Representing various international clients in connection with Foreign Corrupt Practices Act/corruption and competition matters including internal investigations, compliance programs and dealing with governmental enforcement agencies in multiple jurisdictions.
    • Representing a borrower in a US$500 million multicurrency syndicated loan.
    • Representing buyers and sellers in multimillion-dollar transnational acquisitions and divestitures.
