Peter A. Pavarini

Peter Pavarini represents healthcare providers in a full range of strategic, transactional and regulatory matters including hospital-physician affiliation strategies, acquisitions and mergers of healthcare facilities, compliance plans, joint ventures and capital formation. Peter is co-chair of Squire Sanders’ Healthcare Reform Task Force. He has been listed for healthcare law in The Best Lawyers in America each year since 1991 and has been selected as an Ohio Super Lawyer each year since 2005.

Peter is a regular speaker and presenter on healthcare issues, particularly on the topic of hospital-physician integration and health system strategy. He has delivered more than 25 speeches on the formation of accountable care organizations since the passage of the Patient Protection and Accountable Care Act in 2010.

He is the executive editor of The ACO Handbook: A Guide to Accountable Care Organizations, the first legal text to be published on this subject. Peter is also the author of numerous articles including "New Economics of Accountable Healthcare and Legal Implications for Providers," appearing in the BNA Health Care Policy Report, May 9, 2011, and the legal chapter for Essentials of Health Care Finance, 7th edition, 2010. Peter served as the editor in chief of United States Health Care Law and Rules, published by the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) from 1994 to 2006.

Peter serves on the board of directors and Executive Committee of the American Health Lawyers Association and is a member of the American and Columbus Bar Associations. He is the past chair of The Ohio State Bar Association’s Health Care Law Committee, and also a member of the Ohio Society of Healthcare Attorneys and the North Carolina Society of Healthcare Attorneys. Peter has been a visiting lecturer at The Ohio State University’s Fisher School of Business and Capital University Law School.

Experiencia Reciente

    • Designing and developing a highly successful physician integration model for a multihospital system which now employs nearly 300 physicians, resulting in a dramatic increase in financial performance and quality of care.
    • Advising multihospital systems in the development of specialty clinical institutes for the co-management of cardiovascular, orthopedic, oncology and other service lines.
    • Providing counsel in the syndication of more than 20 ambulatory surgical centers including one that was converted to a specialty surgical hospital.
    • Advising an internationally recognized integrated health system on the restructuring of its relationship with a provider-sponsored health plan.
    • Developing the legal structure which allowed more than 40 primary care groups to consolidate into one of the largest independent medical practices in the United States.
    • Serving as an adviser to a technology company that provided the infrastructure for one of the first statewide health information exchanges.
    • Providing counsel in the development of more than 150 primary care networks in 20 states.
    • Advising the boards of directors for numerous multihospital systems, including academic medical centers, on the transformation of their organizations to ones that can manage bundled payments and other alternatives to fee-for-service.
    • Planning for the conversion of existing hospital-physician relationships such as employment models into accountable care organizations under the Patient Protection and Accountable Care Act of 2010.
