Laing P. Akers

Senior Attorney

Laing Akers focuses her practice on commercial real estate and corporate transactional matters including private placement of equity, affordable housing and community development transactions, leasing, commercial financing, general corporate counseling and related business matters. Laing has represented companies in all stages of development and evolution including formation, capitalization planning, capital and debt financing, and corporate governance.

Laing spends a significant portion of her time on affordable housing and community development matters involving low-income housing tax credits, new markets tax credits and historic rehabilitation tax credits. She has counseled syndicators, investors and lenders in connection with direct and indirect equity investments in and lending to affordable housing and community development projects, and has participated in transactions across the country with various developers and state and federal agencies.

Laing has advised a variety of financial institutions in connection with documenting and negotiating various commercial financing facilities including syndicated facilities, senior debt facilities, mezzanine financing and real estate-backed financing.

Laing has regularly been selected as a Rising Star by Ohio Super Lawyers magazine, a distinction that recognizes lawyers under the age of 40 or in practice for 10 years or less. She participated in the Columbus Bar Association Barrister Leadership program.

In 2011 Columbus2020, an organization dedicated to developing the economy of central Ohio, elected Laing to its Board of Directors.

Laing is a member of the American, Ohio State and Columbus Bar Associations.

    • Advising various commercial lenders in financing multifamily housing, commercial development, hospital and senior care facilities.
    • Representing investors, leverage lenders and borrowers in various new market tax credit program transactions.
    • Negotiating commercial lease agreements for tenants and landlords.
    • Reorganizing a complex multinational corporate structure during emergence from bankruptcy.
    • Representing lead agents, participants and borrowers in connection with secured syndicated credit facilities.
