Work Assignments
Summers at Squire Sanders are built on hands-on experience. During your time you will have the opportunity to regularly participate in every aspect of the practice of law from complex research to building client relationships. Assignments to multiple practice areas allow summer associates to explore our diverse practice groups and provide an opportunity for summer associates to meet lawyers with a variety of professional backgrounds and expertise. You get to know them and they get to know you.

While the summer associate experience differs from office to office, we try to expose law students to our seamless approach to legal service. The program is designed to provide a quality, challenging work experience that closely mirrors that of a first-year associate. We attempt to expose each summer associate to both transactional and advocacy matters, while helping each to explore his or her individual practice interests. We utilize an electronic program for tracking summer associate projects and obtaining evaluations. An online assignment board is available in most offices to give summer associates the opportunity to choose their own projects from the assignment pool, subject to meeting client needs. The summer associate projects utilize skills such as research, writing and legal analysis.

As an international law firm, it is essential that we expose potential associates to a global legal atmosphere. This sometimes means allowing summer associates to experience the practice of law outside the United States.

Evaluations
Squire Sanders makes every attempt to provide regular feedback after each assignment, both verbally and through an electronic evaluation program. Each office makes arrangements for individual formal evaluations during the middle of the summer and at the conclusion of the summer program. We also assign mentors to each summer associate who are available to provide informal evaluations.

Social Events
Throughout the summer, we plan a variety of enjoyable social events. They give everyone a chance to relax and get to know the people behind Squire Sanders. Social events from Summer 2007 included dinners and cocktails at partners’ homes, bowling parties, family picnics, firm softball leagues, attendance at local sports events, museums and concerts. We also provide summer associates an opportunity to give back to the community by getting involved in pro bono opportunities coordinated with nonprofit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity.

Compensation
We offer competitive salaries in all of our offices. You can be confident of our commitment to continually review summer associate salaries, not only annually, but whenever the market merits attention. The firm will cover reasonable relocation and travel costs from your law school to your principal office for the summer program.
