John Poulsen

John Poulsen is the managing partner of Squire Sanders’ Perth office and is recognised as a leading finance lawyer in Australia.

As well as acting for Australia’s preeminent financiers such as National Australia Bank, Commonwealth Bank, Westpac Banking Corporation, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group, Macquarie Bank and Babcock & Brown, John also acts for project sponsors (such as Alcoa, Portman Mining and Jinchuan) in project finance transactions, such as the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline, the Koolyanobbing iron ore project, the Burton coal project and many others.

He has been involved in the project financing of power stations, gas pipelines, oil and gas projects and mining projects in Western Australia (WA) and also has considerable experience in securitisation of various types of receivables.

John is the immediate past state president of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) Western Australia and was a member of the national board of CEDA from 2004 to 2011. He is also a member of the WA Branch of the Australia China Business Council, member of the Curtin Graduate School of Business Advisory Council, deputy chair and member of the board of Volunteering WA and chair of the Corporate Volunteer Council of Western Australia.

    • Advising Bankwest on the sale of project assets by Nord Australex Nominees Pty Ltd to Straits Mining Ltd, joint venture partners in the Tritton copper project located in New South Wales.
    • Acting for ANZ and Westpac Banking Corporation on a AU$325 million financing to Emeco Group secured over mining services equipment located in Australia and Indonesia.
    • Acting for Rolls-Royce Power Ventures Overseas Limited on financing a power station in Northwest Western Australia.
    • Advising the Western Australia Department of Resource Development regarding the risk associated with the project financing of energy and resources projects in WA.
    • Acting for Macquarie Bank on the structured financing of the AU$300 million Port Geographe project in WA.
    • Advising Jinchuan in a AU$270 million nickel project.
