Barry Goldsmith’s practice focuses on patent matters in a wide variety of electrical engineering disciplines including computer software and hardware, integrated circuit designs, computer processor architectures, semiconductor processing, cellular and land-based telecommunication systems, medical devices, optical systems and cable television systems. He counsels clients on patent validity and infringement opinions and the design and implementation of non-infringing alternatives to patented technology.

Barry has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of United States patent applications involving computer software and hardware, semiconductor processing, telecommunication systems, medical devices, optical systems and cable television systems. The computer software technologies include user interfaces, virtualization systems, middleware, artificial intelligence systems, product configurators and databases. The computer hardware technologies include microprocessor architectures, disk drives, solid state memory, routers and computer networks. The telecommunication systems include VoIP, CDMA and GSM technologies.

Barry has also handled appeals to the USPTO Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, as well as patent post issuance proceedings including the preparation of Ex Parte and Inter Partes Reexaminations.

Finally, Barry has represented clients in complex patent and IP litigation before district courts and in Section 337 investigations before the US International Trade Commission.

Prior to receiving his Juris Doctor from the University of Florida, Barry was an engineer for IBM and designed personal computers for several years.

Barry’s speaking engagements include “Patent Reexamination: An Essential Piece of the Patent Litigation Toolkit,” presented internally to various corporations in 2010 and 2011; “VoIP Patent Issues,” presented at the Comptel Plus Fall 2008 Convention in Orlando, Florida; and “Verizon v. Vonage VoIP Patent Litigation,” presented at the NVTC New Media Technologies 2007 Spring Meeting in Reston, Virginia.

Barry’s articles on IP topics have appeared in Intellectual Property Today and the Legal Times.

Barry is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Intellectual Property Law Section of the American Bar Association.
