Chaundra C. Monday

Associate

Chaundra Monday focuses her practice on civil litigation matters including complex commercial litigation before state and federal courts. She has represented clients in a wide variety of matters including class action defense, arbitrations, employment disputes, Lanham Act claims, trade secret disputes and confidential internal investigations.

Prior to law school, from 1999 to 2001, Chaundra worked as a business analyst at McKinsey & Company, a management consulting firm that advises leading companies on issues of strategy, organization, technology and operations. At McKinsey, Chaundra served clients in many sectors including retail, financial services, manufacturing and nonprofit.

Chaundra was named in the 2011 and 2012 editions of Ohio Super Lawyers – Rising Stars, a listing of the top up and coming lawyers in the state. In 2007 she was named a member of Kaleidoscope Magazine’s Forty Under Forty Club, a group of young professionals recognized for their business and community leadership.

Chaundra is a member of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association and also serves on its Litigation Section Council. Through the Bar Association, she also works with Cleveland Municipal School District high school students as a mock trial coach and a volunteer teacher, providing instruction on basic Constitutional law principles.

Chaundra is also a member of the 2008 class of the Cleveland Bridge Builder’s Flagship Program, which focuses on leadership skills training and fostering increased civic engagement for a diverse group of emerging leaders in Northeast Ohio.

Representative Experience

    • Representing a major retailer in defending consumer class action claims in both federal district court and appellate proceedings and obtaining reversal by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals of a district court’s order certifying a 29-jurisdiction class action alleging consumer fraud.
    • Representing a national industry organization in pursuing Lanham Act false advertising claims against the seller of a leading low-calorie sweetener product.
    • Acting as a member of a national counsel team to an international oil company to successfully defend against class action contamination claims.
    • Acting as a member of a national counsel team to a domestic subsidiary of an international company against claims that one of its products was responsible for workplace injuries.
    • Representing securities brokerage firms in National Association of Securities Dealers (now Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) and NYSE arbitrations concerning broker departure disputes.
    • Acting as lead counsel, pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act, in a habeas appeal to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit involving claim of ineffective assistance of counsel and securing a new trial for a Michigan inmate.
    • Defending members of a church in a case in which the plaintiff sought to assert control over the church via declaratory and injunctive relief.
    • Assisting a financial institution in uncovering the source of fraudulent activity.
    • Assisting with conducting an independent internal investigation into allegations of corruption and overtime abuse within a municipal police department.
