Andrew Sanderson

Senior Associate

Andrew is a senior associate in our transportation, shipping and logistics practice based in our London Office. Andrew heads up the road transport regulation team. His particular expertise therefore covers road transport law including Public Inquiries before the Traffic Commissioner and Transport Appeal Tribunal, defending road transport prosecutions in the Magistrates' and Crown Court, health and safety, corporate manslaughter, Coroners' Inquests. Andrew’s practice also encompasses international trade disputes regarding the international sale and shipment of goods, voyage and time charters, bills of lading and general trading disputes. He is a Solicitor-Advocate with rights of audience in the Higher Courts both Criminal and Civil. Andrew also lectures on issues such as corporate manslaughter, corporate\directors' responsibility.

Representative Experience

    General Transport
    • Advising drivers\operators in relation to death by dangerous\careless driving prosecutions.
    • Representing a driver in one of the first prosecutions for death by careless driving.
    • Representing Passenger Carrying Vehicle Operators and freight transport operators of all sizes in Public Inquiries before the Traffic Commissioner and/or the Transport Appeal Tribunals.
    • Advising transport operators on applications, renewals and variations of Operators Licences.
    • Advising operators on drivers' hours policies.
    • Representing drivers\operators who are prosecuted for various road traffic matters in both the Magistrates' and Crown Courts including; driving without due care, overloading offences, breach of drivers hours.
    • Advising various organisations on work driving policies.
    • Conducting High Court litigation and Judicial Reviews in relation to road transport matters.
    • Representing private individuals prosecuted for various road traffic offences.
    • Representation\advice for drivers in relation to protection of their driving licence.
    • Representing transport companies who are investigated and/or prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive.
    • Advising Company Directors in PACE interviews.
    • Appearing on behalf of organisations\individuals in the Coroners' Court.

    Maritime/Shipping
    • Advising carries on defending damage claims arising out of the carriage of steel products.
    • Representing parties at arbitration proceedings.
    • Advising clients in relation to the basis on which and the procedure for attaching a Maritime Lien.
    • Advising carriers on Rule B Proceedings.
    • Advising carriers on Rule E Proceedings.
    • Advising clients on demurrage claims.
    • Representing ship owner in relation to arrest of a vessel.
    • Advising in relation to multi-jurisdictional claim for cargo and vessel damage.
    • Advising carriers in relation to claims arising out of cargo contamination.
    • Acting for clients in relation to disputes arising out of the delivery of various cargoes.

Member of the Honourable Society of Grays Inn, the Solicitors Association of Higher Court Advocates and Member of The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (UK).
